Great spots to picnic or just sit and enjoy the beautiful Maine coast. Most of the rocks here are thinly layered, with the layers tilted in various directions. LaVerna Preserve Easy hike with beautiful views of Moscungus Bay. The most abundant type of rock along the shore of the preserve is metamorphic rock, formed by heat and pressure at some time in its history. Tucked away in Bristol, just north of Maine's iconic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, you'll find this preserve that off. The shoreline ranges from the steeply sloping ledges near the southern tip of Brown’s Head to the beach at Leighton’s Cove. LaVerna Preserve is a gem of the midcoast. Abandoned long ago, the land is filling in with high bush blueberry, red raspberry, white pine, sweet fern, bracken fern, and huckleberry. Stone walls, cellar holes, and stone piles bear witness to early settlers. Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site is located at the entrance to Pemaquid Harbor, Maine, one of the earliest sites of European occupation in North America. The center of the preserve, however, reflects more of the land’s human history. Plan plenty of time to scramble along the rocky shore and explore the tide pools. The easy 2 ½ mile trail leads through a diverse forest of oak, maple, spruce, and birch, ending in a panoramic vista of Muscongus Bay and off-shore islands. The southern portion is populated by dense stands of white and red spruce approximately 60 to 100 years old. This preserve, located in Round Pond, ME, is noted for its rocky shoreline and magnificent crashing waves. The northern portion of the preserve is thickly wooded with red oak, white birch, red and white spruce, and white pine as the dominant species. You can extend the hike along the water and back through the woods on another trail. An easy 15-minute hike through the woods leads you out to the rocky coast with awesome views overlooking Muscongus Bay and islands. The preserve has 2.5 miles of walking trails that take visitors through thick forest, across overgrown farmland and along a 3,600-foot shoreline that ranges from rocky to sandy. A short ten-minute drive down Route 32 towards Round Pond is LaVerna Preserve. The 120-acre preserve is just one of many outdoors places to visit during a stay at Newcastle Inn. Few areas in Maine can provide a snapshot of Maine’s natural beauty and geologic history like the La Verna Preserve. ![]()
